As a child, Leopold Charles Matzal enjoyed stories of medieval knights. It is only fitting, then, that in adulthood, he should become a member of the Schlaraffia, a German arts and literature organization that used the theme of knighthood as part of its culture. Matzal’s “knight’s name” within the organization was Brenn’nessl. Over the years, Matzal served as an officer within the New York and the Totawa lodges. He painted a series of portraits of fellow members in their costumes.
